Gunboats, Rivers, Bayous, and Railroads

The Western Theatre of the American Civil War is one that is often overshadowed by the battles in the east between the Federal Army of the Potomac and the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. Despite this, the Western Theatre featured several major operations including the Campaign for Vicksburg which proved to have a major effect in the overall war effort and its outcome. Gunboats, Rivers, Bayous, and Railroads In the early years of the war the North found most of its successes in this theatre. While the Army of the Potomac was struggling with poor leadership, the Army of the Tennessee, commanded by Major General Ulysses S. Grant, proved to be a brilliant tactician and strategist. Though he made his fair share of mistakes, his leadership held the Federal armies of the Western Theatre together and he would become the major factor behind several victories that determined the outcome of the Vicksburg Campaign and eventually victory for the North to end the war.
